Xerxes: A Musical Journey

The band Xerxes returns to the music scene with an introspective album.

The project explores themes such as alienation, inner conflict, and the acceptance of the inevitable.

Inspired by bands like Shining and Dream Theater, as well as the somber atmosphere of Bacovia’s poetry.

The new album promises a deep and captivating sonic experience.

Xerxes is a black metal band from Romania.

Originally established in 2022, it suffered numerous member changes, with only its two core members remaining, Frykt (guitar and drums) and Rain (bass and vocals).

An Organic Creative Process

Unlike previous materials, this album was composed in a more fluid and cinematic manner.

The band chose to focus more on creating a coherent atmosphere, abandoning rigid structures and traditional genre patterns.

Thus, the music becomes a complex narrative thread, with each track acting as a puzzle piece in a broader story.

Studio Experiences and Hidden Messages

A remarkable aspect of the recording process was that band members came to understand each other’s instruments better.

This allowed them to contribute creatively beyond their traditional roles.

An interesting detail is that the album’s lyrics form a hidden story that can be deciphered if the tracks are listened to in a certain order.

The song titles suggest an existential journey: from alienation (Within The Rings of Damnation), passing through chaos (Manslaughter).

The void (The Eerie Darkness of The Void), takes us to acceptance (The Essence of Silence) and total withdrawal (The Hermit).

Music Transformed into Mystical Entities

Each track was envisioned as a supernatural entity:

Within The Rings of Damnation is a spirit condemned to seek an impossible truth.

Manslaughter personifies a demon that feeds on fear.

The Eerie Darkness of The Void is the eternal, formless void.

The Essence of Silence – represented by two twin entities—one asleep in absolute silence, the other absorbing all sound.

The Hermit is an enigmatic figure, walking between realities.

Audience Reactions and the Album’s Place in Contemporary Black Metal

A surprising piece of feedback received by the band was the resemblance of the album to video game soundtracks, due to its melodic and immersive nature.

Xerxes believes that this material fits into the modern direction of black metal without losing the genre’s essence.

The composition includes elements of dark ambient and dark folk, adding sonic complexity.

A Cinematic Universe

If this album were to be turned into a film, the ideal director, according to the band, would be Stanley Kubrick.

The dark and tense atmosphere of his works resonates with Xerxes’ musical vision.

The Future of Xerxes

After the album’s release, the band plans to take their project to the next level with concerts, merchandise, and physical format releases.

Additionally, the members are considering a collaboration in the form of a split album with a local band—an innovative concept for the local metal scene.

Through this album, Xerxes not only explores philosophical and existential themes but also succeeds in redefining the boundaries of modern black metal.
